Have you ever heard of The Invisible Gorilla? In this book, Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons reveal why people succumb to illusions based on feeling instead of reason. Psychologists call this Selective Attention. Selective Attention happens when you focus so deeply on one thing that you ignore, suppress, or tune out any other information. Selective Attention is activated through visual or auditory information. For example, the cost of eggs. I barely watched the news during the election season, but I remember hearing about egg prices being too high. Political strategists successfully made the price of eggs a primary focus which tapped into the feelings of Americans and caused them to ignore, suppress, and tune out reason. I have read comments and heard people say that the people who supported Trump are stupid. I would argue that they are not stupid. Political strategists utilized psychological manipulation solidifying this new era of politics. If you hold a political office and claim to love this country, it is time to stand up and protect the general welfare and liberty of all Americans. This means alerting Americans about the misuse of these psychological tactics then strategically countering the manipulation to change the narrative.
